Scholarships available for students interested in broadcasting
The Hawaii Association of Broadcasters Inc. is offering academic scholarships to high school seniors and college students with a minimum 2.5 grade point average and the desire to work in the broadcast industry in Hawaii.
A completed application, a letter of recommendation from a current or former teacher and a personal interview with the Hawaii Association of Broadcasters scholarship committee are required. Applications are available through April 30 at hawaiibroadcasters.com.
Last year more than 20 students received awards ranging from $500 to $3,500 for study at schools in Hawaii and on the mainland.

Junior Ranger program, free entrance mark National Park Week
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is inviting keiki to become Junior Rangers Saturday. A Junior Ranger station with handbooks and park information will be set up from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Kilauea Visitor Center and from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Jaggar Museum observation deck. Keiki who complete an interactive junior ranger handbook will earn a Junior Ranger badge, a Junior Ranger certificate and will be sworn in as a National Park Junior Ranger.
Saturday and Sunday are fee-free days in the park to kick off National Park Week, which is Saturday through April 26.
Saturday is also International Monuments and Sites Day, which marks the 70th anniversary of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park will also be open free of charge Saturday and Sunday.
Mele Murals fundraiser held at Kona Brewing Co.
Kona Brewing Co. and The Brewery Block will offer a night market event centered around art, fashion and music to raise funds for Mele Murals from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday.
O.N.O. Kona, or “Our Night Out, Kona” will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Brewery Block, is free and open to all ages. The event includes live music, a vendor marketplace, food vendors, Hawaiian cultural demonstrations and a beer garden for those 21 and older.
The theme for April’s event is “Bloom” and will feature local farmers and sustainability demonstrations. Students from Mele Murals will paint a live mural throughout the evening.
Puuhonua o Honaunau hosts National Park Week activities
Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park will offer several programs during National Park Week.
A kapa (bark cloth) making demonstration will be from 10 a.m. from 2 p.m. Saturday. An ahu lai (ti-leaf cape) making demonstration is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. On Tuesday, ohe kapala (bamboo stamp) making will be demonstrated from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. An ilana niu (coconut leaf weaving) demonstration is planned from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday. From 12:30 to 2 p.m. April 23, an ulana lauhala (pandanas leaf weaving) demonstration will be held. A hukilau making demonstration will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 24. Finally, a Junior Ranger Day will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 25.
“Find Your Park” is the theme for this year’s National Park Week. National Park staff encourages everyone to find their park and share their stories online at findyourpark.com.
Shops at Mauna Lani hosts Paniolo Day, monthly events
Shops at Mauna Lani will hold Paniolo Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday to celebrate the history and heritage of the paniolo on Hawaii Island with a historical exhibit, live entertainment, games, activities and food vendors. A weeklong Paniolo Hall of Fame exhibit will run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. through the day of the event in Suite 306.
The shopping center also holds a Pau Hana Culinary Festival from 4 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday, which features food vendors, gourmet products and live music.
A Polynesian Cultural Festival celebrates the islands of Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa and Aotearoa from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on the third Monday of each month.

VFW activities announced
Kona VFW Post 12122 will serve a Copper River salmon dinner. The meal will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, or until the food is gone, at the post off Kaiwi Street behind Kona Locksmith. Dinner is $25 per person. Attendees are encouraged to bring an ukulele or acoustic guitar for an open jam.

Afternoon tea and croquet tournament planned
Kilauea Drama &Entertainment Network is hosting CroKDEN, an afternoon tea and croquet tournament, from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Maluhia Guest House in Mauna Loa Estates, Volcano.
The event will raise funds for the group’s annual summer musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The King and I.” The grand prize for the croquet tournament is a Body Glove cruise for two. There will also be a silent auction and entertainment by Walter Greenwood on the piano. Attendees are encouraged to wear big hats and afternoon tea attire.
